Benefit More with SARFIP

Want to know more about the benefits of protecting species at risk (SAR) on the farm? Hear it from the farmer!

With help from SARFIP cost-share funding, these producers have implemented habitat creation and protection BMPs and have seen first hand the mutual benefits for SAR, the livestock, and the farm.

Freedom Creek Farms

Tim and Katie Lizotte operate a beef farm in Kendel. With help from SARFIP cost-share, the Lizotte’s have protected woodland and wetland habitat areas by fencing out their livestock herd and by building a safe stream crossing. They also tackled invasive species like Dog Strangling Vine through mechanical removal to help maintain a healthy habitat for native species and SAR.

Cedar Creek Farms

Laryssa Sawyer and family run Cedar Creek Farms, a fruit farm in Amaranth. With help from SARFIP, she accessed cost-share funding to build a safe stream crossing. When soil erosion occurs near surface water, valuable nutrients and topsoil are lost through runoff, which can negatively impact water quality and aquatic habitat. Laryssa was able to address erosion through in-field swales that now help in the management of habitat for pollinators and fruit trees.

Keller Farms

With help from SARFIP, Fred and Katie Keller worked with a Conservation Specialist to address erosion issues in a riparian area for SAR on their farm in Shedden. They constructed a stream crossing and pond to protect sensitive turtle and waterfowl habitat. The safe, easy movement of livestock and/or equipment on the farm is essential to a successful and sustainable operation.

Eden Lane Farms

Dick Kuiperij operates a sheep farm in Woodville, Ontario. With help from SARFIP, Dick implemented a new rotational grazing system in support of grassland bird habitat, and has seen many mutual benefits for the sheep, the health of the pasture and the environment.

Everterra Farms

Steve Timmermans operates a permaculture farm in Sparta, Ontario called Everterra Farms. He addressed erosion issues along a creek, by implementing contour terraces and other erosion control structures. Soil conservation practices can help reduce soil erosion from the field, and preserve the quality of aquatic habitat for SAR.
