Habitat in Focus – Contest Rules and Regulations

Contest Categories

1. Water

Streams and rivers are riparian areas that flow through farmlands. These areas provide important wildlife habitat for many reptile and amphibian species. Many of Ontario’s animals and plants inhabit wetlands during part or all of their life cycle, including many species at risk.

Subject matter may include:

  • Riparian areas protected from livestock
  • Improved stream crossings on the farm
  • Manmade habitat structures for SAR
  • Natural habitat enhancements for SAR
  • Restored wetlands
  • SAR in aquatic habitat

2. Trees

Many species at risk can benefit from tree cover on farms. Forests and other treed habitat, including windbreaks, provide important homes for many species at risk. Tree cover helps animals to move safely across the landscape, while providing shelter, food and water.

Subject matter may include:

  • Groupings of trees or forest
  • Seedlings or saplings
  • Manmade habitat structures for SAR
  • Natural habitat enhancements and wildlife corridors
  • SAR in the woods

3. Grasslands

Grasslands are open natural spaces made up of grasses, wildflowers and sedges, and have less than 35% tree and shrub cover. Types of agricultural grasslands include pastures, hayfields and abandoned fields. They can provide important habitat for species that rely on prairie, savanna and meadow grasslands. Many grassland bird SAR are especially dependent on grasslands.

Subject matter may include:

  • Wildflowers and native grasses on the farm
  • Livestock grazing
  • Manmade habitat structures for SAR
  • Natural habitat enhancements
  • SAR on grasslands

Rules and Regulations


The contest is open to residents of Ontario. Employees of Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association, as well as immediate family and household members of those employees, are not eligible to enter.

How to Enter

Visit the OSCIA website and upload your photo(s) with:

  • Your first and last name
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • The category you are submitting the photo to (e.g. water, forest or grassland habitat)

You may submit a maximum of 3 photographs to each category, for a total of 9 submissions.

All images must:

  • Be taken on a farm in Ontario
  • Be digital photos that are submitted online
  • All digital files must be:
    • 5 megabytes (MB) or smaller
    • .jpeg files
    • At least 1,600 pixels wide (if horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image)
  • Be original to you (that is, they must be your own creation). Only minor colour correction, cropping is permitted; no significant photo editing is permitted
  • The applicant acknowledges that they have sufficient written permission of any recognizable locations or people appearing in the photograph to be able to grant to OSCIA the right to publish their submission
  • Entrants may be asked to supplement their submission (such as with a paragraph about their photo or the highest resolution version of their photo) anytime on or after the contest closing date

DEADLINE: The contest closes midnight 11:59 pm on September 30, 2016.

Judging and Selection of Winners

A panel consisting of employees of OSCIA will judge all eligible submissions. Judging will take place after the contest closes. Judges will select three winners. The decision of the judges is final.

Awarding of Prizes

Winners will be contacted by email. The winning photos will be debuted on the OSCIA website.

The judge’s decisions’ will be guided by the following criteria:

  • Subject Matter – Is the photo a good match with the category and overall contest theme of homes for SAR on the farm?
  • Creativity and Uniqueness – Does the image engage the viewer in a fresh and creative way?
  • Technical Merits – Is the image sharp? Is the composition pleasing to the eye?

The chances of winning a prize will depend on the number of eligible photographs received and the evaluation of the photographs by the judging panel.

Grant of License

  • You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit. By submitting any photograph to the contest, you grant to OSCIA, a royalty-free, irrevocable and non-exclusive right and license to use, copy, adapt, modify, transmit, communicate, publicly display and distribute the photograph.
  • By submitting your photograph, you are allowing OSCIA to publish the photo on our website and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) or in any other electronic promotional materials.
  • OSCIA will credit all photographs with the caption “Person’s Name”
  • OSCIA will retain a digital copy of your photograph that will be archived in OSCIA photo library and accessible to OSCIA staff
  • General: Those involved in judging the contest and their immediate families are not eligible to submit photos.
  • OSCIA reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify, amend or suspend the contest, in its sole discretion, if any technical or other problems prevent the fair or proper administration of the on-line portion of the contest and if the OSCIA does so, in its sole discretion, it further reserves the right when terminating the on-line portion of the contest to conduct the judging of, and the awarding of prizes for, those valid entries previously received during the contest period.
  • OSCIA will have no liability whatsoever if for any reason the contest is not capable of running as planned due to technical problems.
  • OSCIA reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to disqualify your participation in the contest and to determine your entries of photos to be ineligible, if you enter this contest or try to do so by any means contrary to these rules or which would be unfair to other entrants or where contest entries are generated by any mechanical or automated means. All photos that have been tampered with, reproduced, falsified or altered are void.
  • By participating in this contest, you release and agree to indemnify and hold harmless the OSCIA and its employees, directors, officers, affiliates and agents from any and all damages, injuries, claims, causes of actions, or losses of any kind resulting from your participation.
  • By participating in this contest, you further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the OSCIA and its employees, directors, officers, members, affiliates and agents from any and all damages, injuries, claims, causes of actions or losses of any kind (including actual legal fees and expenses) arising from or related to: (a) your failure to comply with any of these rules; (b) any misrepresentation you make under these rules or otherwise to the OSCIA; or (c) your participation in the contest.
  • A prizewinner’s refusal or inability to accept the prize awarded shall release OSCIA from all obligations arising from this contest. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, the prize may be awarded to an alternate winner.
  • This photo contest is funded by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and is hosted by the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA).
