Farmers and researchers are teaming up through the Living Lab–Ontario Nitrogen Management project to find smarter ways to grow crops while reducing environmental impacts. On a sixth-generation family farm, innovative trials are testing nitrogen inhibitors, measuring greenhouse gas emissions, and exploring practices like composting and biochar to improve soil health and nutrient efficiency. By combining farmer experience with scientific research, the project is uncovering practical, data-driven solutions that boost productivity, build more resilient soils, and help reduce agriculture’s climate footprint.
