Farmers and researchers are teaming up through the Living Lab–Ontario Nitrogen Management project to find smarter ways to grow crops while reducing environmental impacts. On a sixth-generation family farm, innovative trials are testing nitrogen inhibitors, measuring greenhouse gas emissions, and exploring practices like composting and biochar to improve soil health and nutrient efficiency. By combining farmer experience with scientific research, the project is uncovering practical, data-driven solutions that boost productivity, build more resilient soils, and help reduce agriculture’s climate footprint.

Through the Living Lab–Ontario Greenhouse Gas Emissions on Dairy Farms project, farmers and scientists are working together to measure and reduce the climate impact of dairy production. Using advanced monitoring at a commercial “supersite” farm, researchers track greenhouse gas emissions from the crops that feed dairy herds and test practices like enhanced-efficiency fertilizers. The goal: practical, data-driven solutions that help dairy farmers improve nutrient management, reduce emissions, and build a more sustainable future for milk production.

Can the way you manage nitrogen make a difference for the environment?
This study under Ontario’s Living Lab – Ontario (LL-ON) program is using Holos, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s whole-farm modelling tool, to find out. Researchers are measuring the impact of nitrogen beneficial management practices (N-BMPs) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across 11 study sites in Ontario.
This work is providing valuable insights into how different nitrogen management strategies can help farmers lower emissions, improve efficiency, and contribute to climate-friendly agriculture.
